Continuity editing: 180 Degree Rule

Week 1

In terms of continuity editing it is advised to utilise an imaginary line between the characters in order to create a spatial awareness for the audience, as shown below.

If broken which some directors such as Kubrick, Yasujiro Ozu's, Godard, Wachowski brothers etc, purposely do so in order to disorientate and confuse the audience. A golden example of not adhering to the rule to create a desired, deliberate effect is Kubricks, The Shining, bathroom scene between Jack and the butler the wide reverse angle shots cause an unnerving to the viewer as the jarring there comprehension of the characters spatial relationship.
